Built in 2007 as part of a project to improve the streets and provide connectivity in the area southeast of Bernal Hill.

There are also older concrete steps down from Chapman Street that provide access to 77 Nevada Street. This may have also provided through access to Powhattan Avenue via a dead-end unpaved driveway that ran halfway up the block, which was removed when the new stairway was built. Additional wood steps were added to extend this stairway to connect it to the new one.
