Shakespeare Street between Rhine Street and Head Street

  • Neighborhood: Outer Mission
  • Location: At the north end of the retaining wall that divides the upper and lower halves of Shakespeare Street between Head Street and Rhine Street
  • Height: 15 feet

The southernmost stairway in San Francisco, only about 200 feet north of the city limits. This block is so far south that the upper level of the street can only be reached from within San Francisco via these stairs, because the intersection of Shakespeare and Rhine is within Daly City.

Built in the 1930s when the street was graded and divided into two levels.
